Bank at Macchiagodena, in the foyer. Only one person can enter at a time. You press the button to enter. If you have no metal on you, the door will open, allowing you to enter the bank proper. There's a bank of lockers behind me, where you can lock up your purse, etc.

Castelpetrosa. A large sactuary/church built on (or close to) the site where a miracle had taken place. I haven't quite gotten that straight yet.

Zio Nicola, Zio Giovanni and my mother. Zio Giovanni is the brother of my father's sister's husband. Giovanni is the last surviving member of his siblings. He had 3 brothers, two of which I new well, as they lived in Thorold. A lovely, talkative man, who talked more in one day than I ever heard one of his brothers talk their whole lives. At this point, he was trying to convince my mother to come over for dinner. We were so busy, visiting so many people, that we couldn't be sure we'd have time.

Zia Incoronata in front of her stove. This is the spot where she spends a lot of time. The stove is amazing - it's wood fired. Most families we visited had one, but often used their gas stove. Zia Incoronata lights this one for lunch and dinner. The kitchen gets very hot, but she likes it that way. So did I. Ma in front of the old blacksmith shop. She says Tony used to like to spend time here when he was little. He used to like to pick up the little scraps of metal and play with him. There's a story in here I can't remember... something about him taking some metal home and trying to fire it. I think he got burned. I'll have to ask her and fill this in.

Visited the sister and mother of a friend in Thorold. That's Concetta and her mother, Incoronata. We wandered around trying to find the place - my mom was still getting her bearings, and bumped into a bunch of kids. My mother asked for Concetta's husband, and the kids told us he was dead. A little shocking... my my mother said, no, that can't be right. So the kids pointed off in the direction of a house a little ways off, and a woman standing there, suggesting we e ask her. And that's we were looking for.

This fellow is who had supposedly died. Looked very much alive to me. He's Benedetto Perrella, Concetta's husband. No relation to us. (Well, he probably is, but it's pretty far back.)

As we walked along, my mother saw the crosses at the top of the hill, and asked I take a picture of her there. It seems at Easter, they walk the stations of the cross (an reenactment of Jesus carrying the cross). This is the last station. Still standing after all those years. The lady standing next to my mother is my second cousing. I believe she's Donatella's daughter. And I believe that's her mother-in-law standing next to her. We came along her place while we were searching for my mother's old school. It was still there, although pretty run down. My second cousin didn't even realize the old building next to her property (actually, it might have been HER property) was actually the old school. My mother, like many girls at the time, only did 1 year of school. She had to tend the sheep afterwards. The parents make fun of the old school (la scuola di Pelile), probabably because of the name. Pelile evokes means small, or thin hair - evoking thoughts of one or two strands. It seems to me my father didn't go to the same school. His school seemed to be an actual school. I have his old report card. At that time, only 5 years of school was available. My grandfather had my dad repeat grade 5, thinking he might be able to learn a little extra.

We did a lot of wandering about today, trying to find Tony's godparents. When we finally found the house, and they were out. A neighbour told us they had gone off to help their daughter canning tomatoes (late August is tomato canning season - even for my mother, who had done it before she left, and again after she got home.) It turns out the daughter lives a few houses down from my aunt and uncle's place, where we were staying!! So we had wandered all over the place to find ourselves right back where we had started. Maria runs a catering business... cooking roasted pigs for parties, as well as driving a catering truck to events. The pig smelled delicious. My mother was up to her tricks again. After visiting with Tony's godparents, we headed next door to "Zampa Corta". It's billed as one of the few 'agri-tourism' places in the immediate area. It's a restaurant and hotel, situated on a peak part way up the mountain. Great views! While Angela and I timidly wandered around (not wanting to disturb guests), my mother wandered off. Ten minutes later, I hear her yelling for us to come on down. We both winced. She had let herself in and found the owner. We all sat down and my mother and the owner had lively conversation, discussing who they knew in common, how she came to own the place, what business was like, etc. It seems doctors like to visit the place. the shot is of the dining area just inside the doors. Inside, it's a little more formal. We stayed for a while, as the owner's family started to come in to prepare for the evening's dinner.
