Standing on the balcony at Zio Antonio's house, I spot a clump of buildings half way up the mountain side. Could it be... yes, I'm told it's Civita. Boiano is often in fog/mist. Figs won't grow there because it's too cold. I was surprised, thinking the valley would be warmer than the mountain side. (Incoronata is covered in fig trees). | Ma told us stories about her aunt coming to visit, in Incoronata. They couldn't grow wheat in Boiano, and so would bring corn bread. Ma said it was a treat to trade corn bread for wheat bread with them - each liking the change from what they normally had. They tell me they grow wheat now in Boiano - genetically improved, I suppose. | Toni and Domenica explained to us that most people have left Civita. They guessed it used to have about 1000 inhabitants, but now only holds 100. Therefore, most of the buildings are abandoned. | The folks in Boiano have a very heavy accent. Tony and Domenica imitated it for us. Personally, I found it to be a little stronger than their own accent. My mother can imitate the accent - a little nasal with certain words (like patane). I had never heard Italian accents before - just different dialects. |

Later, Angela told me that funnily enough, Macchiagodena doesn't really have an accent. It sounds much like Roman Italian. | Although the picture's not clear enough, we could see Macchiagodena about half way up the mountain. | I was taken with these old buildings. Utterly gorgeous, and seemingly perched on a cliff (although it's not obvious from the photos). There was a drop off/cliff both in front and behind them. And to the left.

The inside of one of the buildings I was amazed with (above). Tiny room - you can see the fireplace in the back, and a ladder/stair to the left. (Looks like the building is used for storage now) | Looking up the stairs to the room on the 2nd floor. There are no other rooms leading off the main floor. Did a family actually live in this tiny space??
