Ma had really wanted to visit this church, San Nicola, but it was always locked. She got a little miffed at the priest, who promised to open it if she came by at a certain time, but he wasn't around. Visiting my grandparents' graves. Visiting graves is very important in their culture. It's important to keep candles lit and flowers at the grave site. My mother was extremely happy to hear that Zia Incoronata visits these graves whenever she visits her own relatives. My grandfather was special to her, too.

My mother was determined to find the old traditional shoes while she was there. At first, we didn't think she'd be successful, but finally, we found that Maria had an extra pair that were used for costume purposes. Although they weren't think enough (they should be made from rubber motorcycle tires, but these were made from inner tubes) So, the gaggle of women all tried to remember the complicated way to put the shoes on. White cloths wrap the foot and leg,and the rubber is placed over the bottom of the foot. Strings go through holes in the rubber, and wind up the leg to hold the cloths in place. Although my mother doesn't have any of the cloths here, she's trying to remember how to tie them. Absolutely everyone wore these shoes. They were worn to church, and to dig in the fields.
